Scheduling a meeting across two people's calendars has long involved an email thread of proposed times, each one checked manually against an already-full calendar.
Turning availability into a link
Calendly's core idea was simple: connect your calendar once, and share a link showing only the times you're actually free. The other person picks a slot, and it's on both calendars instantly — no back-and-forth required at all.
Why something this simple took off
It solved a problem almost everyone has, with almost no setup cost and nothing new to learn on the receiving end — the person booking a meeting doesn't need an account or any instructions, which is a large part of why adoption spread so widely, so fast.
It's a good model for any tool trying to replace a manual back-and-forth: remove the friction for the person on the other end of the exchange, not just for the person who installed the tool.
