Filing an insurance claim has traditionally meant a phone call, a claims adjuster assigned to your case, a wait of days or weeks, and a fair amount of uncertainty about what happens next.

Speeding up the parts that don't need a human first

Lemonade's pitch was to use software to handle the straightforward parts of a claim — matching a submitted claim and a few photos against policy terms — to approve and pay out simple claims in minutes rather than days, while still routing anything unusual or high-value to a human reviewer.

Where the limits are

Fast, automated approval works well for a simple, low-dollar claim with clear evidence. It works far less well for a disputed, high-value, or unusual claim, which is exactly why a human review step still exists behind the software rather than being removed entirely.

It's a sensible model for a lot of logistics problems too — automate the simple, high-volume cases aggressively, and make sure a real person is still reachable the moment something falls outside the normal pattern.
