Ask anyone who has moved cities in India in the last few years how they booked their packers and movers, and you'll hear some version of the same story: a friend's recommendation, a phone call, a verbal estimate, and a fair amount of hoping for the best. It's one of the only major purchase decisions left that still runs almost entirely on trust and word of mouth, with no visibility into what's actually happening once the truck leaves your building.
The booking process hasn't changed much
Most moving bookings in India still start the same way they did a decade ago: a phone call to a local operator, a rough description of what's moving, and a price quoted over the phone — often before anyone has actually seen your home or your belongings. The quote you get on day one is rarely the number you pay on moving day.
Why the gap exists
Packers and movers is a highly fragmented industry — thousands of small, local operators, most without the technology or scale to offer the kind of booking experience people now expect from everything else in their lives, from ordering food to booking a cab. Pricing, scheduling and crew assignment are usually managed on paper or over WhatsApp, which makes transparency hard even when an operator genuinely wants to provide it.
What actually needs to change
Three things, in our view:
- Pricing that's locked before the job starts, based on an accurate picture of what's moving — not a guess over the phone.
- Verification that's visible to the customer, not just a claim on a website — who's actually coming to your home, and what's their track record.
- Tracking that doesn't require a phone call — knowing where your things are should be as easy as checking a food delivery app.
That's the gap we're building ShipYou to close — starting with packing and moving, and extending to parcel shipping, under one app with one standard of transparency.
